The Essentials - Part One
Aug 01, 2022
If you are or have been an outdoor enthusiast or adventurer, such as a hiker, runner, walker, kayaker, etc., you have a list of things you consider "essential" to every outing. That list includes hydration and energy requirements such as water, electrolyte replacement, recovery snacks, and meals with higher calories to fuel your body for extra energy. Your list goes on to include the "just in case" items like a well-prepared first aid kit, rain gear, headlamp, toilet paper, maps, matches, firestarter, extra socks, hat, sunglasses, credit cards (you never know what mountain outfitter may have a great sale!), repair kit, duct tape, survival kit!
Wait! Hold on!! You may only be going for a walk on the "greenway" or maybe a saunter on your favorite mountain trail. You probably don't NEED to carry the ice axe today.
ESSENTIAL: noun, a necessary thing.
"we had only the bare essentials in the way of gear."
The Truth is that almost every outdoor adventure organization has established a set of the "Ten Essentials." Most will have many of the same "Essentials," but others will vary in other directions for items important to their specific adventures.
The following links are to "The 10 Essentials," released by several organizations or magazines in the outdoor industry.
My recommendations include many of the same items, so that's a no-brainer! However, we will consider some other things in Essentials Part 2.
Until next time! Happy Trails!
