Independence: freedom from outside control or support: the independent state. www.britannica.com

Independence Day is a time to celebrate America. It marks the day in 1776 when the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, signaling the official separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain amid the Revolutionary War.

Definition of Independence Day ... Merriam-Webster: a civil holiday for the celebration of the anniversary of the beginnings of national independence

So, for a more personal translation, my definition of Independence Day could be a personal celebration of the anniversary of my new beginning or my new normal.

We can all look back on our lives and recognize our milestones to celebrate. Like our forefathers, who marched through the countryside fighting in the pursuit of freedom from the Britts, we, as Cancer survivors or women on our journey to being Cancer-free, log our milestones, mapping steps to our Independence.

On MY personal Independence Day, April 17, I celebrate my separation or Independence Day from Cancer.

I remember, on my first check-up after surgery, my surgeon's PA discussed my pathology report from surgery. After carefully reviewing the report with me, the PA reached into his pocket and handed me a little PINK PIN shaped like a looped ribbon. The words he said, CANCER-FREE, will forever ring in my heart.

"Just like our freedom was hard bought in this country, so our freedom from Cancer is hard bought. Some gave all, all have given some."

a Special Friend.
